When Method Acting Created Magic: Jugal Hansraj on Shabana Azmi’s ‘Coldness’ in Masoom

Four decades later, Jugal Hansraj reveals the fascinating behind-the-scenes story of how Shabana Azmi’s deliberate distance transformed a classic Bollywood film into an emotional masterpiece.

Jugal Hansraj’s Cold Truth Behind the Warmth

In 1983, a nine-year-old Jugal Hansraj stepped onto the sets of Masoom, director Shekhar Kapur’s debut film. What he experienced left him confused—his co-star Shabana Azmi, playing his stepmother, completely avoided him. While she laughed and bonded with the other child actors, young Jugal felt isolated.

Years later, he finally understood why.

Shabana’s Brilliant Method Acting

In an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, Hansraj shared how Azmi maintained professional distance throughout filming. The veteran actress deliberately stayed cold toward him while remaining warm with Urmila Matondkar and Aradhana, who played her biological daughters in the film.

“She was very friendly with the other two girls because she was playing their mom in the movie, but she used to keep a distance from me,” Jugal revealed.

This wasn’t personal—it was pure craftsmanship. Azmi wanted the on-screen tension between stepmother Indu Malhotra and illegitimate son Rahul to feel authentic. According to IMDb, her performance earned critical acclaim for portraying the complex emotions of a wife confronting her husband’s past.

The Magic Behind Indian Cinema’s Timeless Classic

Masoom tells the heartbreaking story of DK Malhotra (Naseeruddin Shah) whose past affair results in an illegitimate son, Rahul. When the child arrives at his doorstep after his mother’s death, family dynamics spiral into emotional chaos.

The film’s beauty lies in Azmi’s transformation—from cold resentment to maternal love. As noted by Wikipedia, her nuanced portrayal captured a woman’s internal struggle between hurt and compassion.

Why This Approach Worked

Hansraj admitted he only understood Azmi’s strategy years later: “The coldness you see on screen had to be genuine. Everyone could feel the discomfort between us. She did that beautifully.”

This dedication to method acting distinguished Masoom from typical Bollywood melodrama. Instead of theatrical performances, audiences witnessed raw, authentic emotions.

The legendary R.D. Burman’s haunting score, particularly the evergreen “Tujhse Naraaz Nahin Zindagi,” perfectly complemented this emotional depth, making the film an enduring classic that’s now available on Amazon Prime Video.

The Legacy Continues

Today, Hansraj looks back fondly at Azmi’s professionalism. Her commitment to craft taught him invaluable lessons about acting that shaped his own career in Bollywood’s evolution.

What seemed like coldness was actually the mark of a true artist—someone willing to prioritize storytelling over personal comfort. That dedication created cinema that still moves audiences 42 years later.
