What to Expect in Season 2 Episode 1: “Death and a Sunset”

The season premiere focuses on Tommy navigating a tense landscape as Cami asserts control over M-Tex Oil following her husband Monty’s death. In Landman Season 2, Tommy faces new pressures at home, and at M-Tex Oil, where Cami pushes him to the brink.

With Jon Hamm’s departure confirmed after Monty died during open heart surgery in season 1, Demi Moore’s Cami Miller takes center stage. Press releases promoting Season 2 have moved Moore up in the cast list just behind Thornton, signaling her expanded role as the grieving widow who proves she’s tougher than anyone expected.

The season 2 trailer teases Cami telling a room full of bankers: “The only difference between me and my husband is that I’m meaner.” If that doesn’t set the tone for what’s coming, nothing will.

Returning Cast: Who’s Back for Season 2?

Oscar winner Billy Bob Thornton is back as M-Tex Oil Company’s indispensable “fixer” Tommy Norris, leading a stellar ensemble cast that includes:

• Demi Moore as Cami Miller (expanded role)
• Ali Larter as Angela Norris (Tommy’s ex-wife)
• Michelle Randolph as Ainsley Norris (Tommy’s daughter)
• Jacob Lofland as Cooper Norris (Tommy’s son)
• Paulina Chávez as Ariana Medina
• Kayla Wallace as Rebecca Savage
• James Jordan as Dale Bradley

Colm Feore, a Season 1 guest star as Nathan, the straight-laced M-Tex attorney, will now be a series regular. But the biggest casting news? Sam Elliott, the Oscar nominee and Screen Actors Guild Award winner, has joined the cast as a Season 2 series regular, playing Tommy’s father, T.L.

Elliott’s presence adds gravitas to an already impressive ensemble, and his history with Sheridan’s work (he starred in 1883) promises compelling family dynamics ahead.

Why Landman Became Paramount+’s Biggest Hit

More than 35 million people tuned into Landman’s premiere episode in 2024, a staggering figure that made history as the most-watched global premiere in Paramount+ history. The combination of Billy Bob Thornton’s magnetic performance, Taylor Sheridan’s authentic storytelling about West Texas oil culture, and explosive drama created an instant phenomenon.

At the 2025 Golden Globes, Thornton earned a nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama, cementing the show’s critical acclaim alongside its commercial success.

The series resonates because it captures the high-stakes world of modern oil barons with the same authenticity Sheridan brought to ranching in Yellowstone. Set in the proverbial boomtowns of West Texas, the show examines both the roughnecks on the ground and the wildcat billionaires calling the shots—an upstairs/downstairs dynamic that keeps viewers hooked.

Season 1 Recap: What Happened Before Season 2?

If you need a refresher before diving into season 2, all 10 episodes of Landman season 1 are currently streaming on Paramount+. The season concluded with Monty Miller’s shocking death from a heart attack during surgery, leaving a massive power vacuum at M-Tex Oil.

Tommy Norris found himself caught between corporate demands, cartel threats, and family drama throughout season 1. His ex-wife Angela continued complicating his life, daughter Ainsley navigated young adulthood with questionable decisions, and son Cooper worked the oil fields while falling for Ariana, the young widow of a worker killed on the job.

The season finale positioned Tommy as the potential successor to run M-Tex, but Cami’s emergence as a formidable businesswoman determined to honor her late husband’s legacy sets up season 2’s central conflict.

What Critics Are Saying About Season 2

While full reviews won’t drop until after the premiere, early buzz from critics who’ve screened advance episodes suggests season 2 delivers even more intensity than the first. The expanded role for Demi Moore has been particularly praised, with Jon Hamm telling USA Today: “Cami’s got so much room to grow and show who she really is. It’s going to be fascinating to watch.”

The addition of Sam Elliott as Tommy’s father promises to explore new dimensions of the protagonist’s character. Elliott’s gravelly voice declaring “You take a long, hard look at me” in the trailer has already become iconic among fans.

Taylor Sheridan’s track record speaks for itself—every show he’s created or co-created for Paramount+ has found massive audiences. Landman continues that tradition while carving out its own identity in the crowded prestige TV landscape.
