What is the Right To Match Card in IPL Mega Auction? Complete Guide to Understanding RTM Card in IPL

RTM Card in IPL Mega Auction : The Indian Premier League (IPL) is renowned for its thrilling cricket matches and dynamic player auctions. Among the many intriguing aspects of the IPL auction is the Right to Match (RTM) card, which plays a crucial role during the mega auctions. But what exactly is an RTM card and how does it influence team strategies?

Let’s have a look into more details : RTM Card in IPL Mega Auction

Understanding the RTM Card

What is an RTM Card?

The Right to Match (RTM) card is a special provision in the IPL mega auction that allows a franchise to retain a player who was part of their squad in the previous season. This is done by matching the highest bid for that player during the auction. Essentially, it gives teams a chance to reclaim their former players without direct bidding wars.

When is the RTM Card Used?

The RTM card is exclusively available during the mega auction, which happens less frequently compared to the annual mini auctions. Mega auctions typically occur every three years, allowing teams to revamp their squads more extensively.

How Does the RTM Card Work?

Auction Dynamics

During the mega auction, all players who are not retained by their franchises are up for bidding. When a player who was part of a franchise in the previous season receives the highest bid from another team, the original franchise can use their RTM card to match that bid and retain the player.

Example Scenario

Let’s say Mumbai Indians (MI) did not retain Rohit Sharma ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. If Chennai Super Kings (CSK) bids INR 15 Crores for Rohit Sharma, MI can use their RTM card to match this bid and retain him for the same amount.

RTM Card Rules and Limitations

Retention and RTM Quotas

• Maximum Retentions: Teams can retain a maximum of five players in total. This includes both direct retentions before the auction and RTM card retentions during the auction.
• Retention Breakdown: For example, if a team retains three players before the auction, they can use two RTM cards during the auction. If only two players are retained pre-auction, three RTM cards can be used and so on.

The RTM card has been part of the IPL mega auctions in 2014 and 2018. The rules allowed teams to use one or two RTMs based on the number of players they had already retained, with a maximum of five retentions in total.

Strategic Importance of RTM Cards

Franchise Strategies

The RTM card offers strategic flexibility to IPL franchises. Teams can plan their squads by retaining key players directly and keeping their RTM cards for crucial moments in the auction. This helps in balancing the team composition and managing the auction purse effectively.

2025 Mega Auction Speculations

For the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction, there are discussions about increasing the number of retentions and RTM cards. Some franchises are advocating for up to seven RTM retentions, allowing them to maintain more continuity in their squads.

The RTM card is a fascinating element of the IPL mega auction, providing teams with a tactical advantage to retain valuable players. By understanding the mechanics and strategic importance of the RTM card, fans can gain deeper insights into the auction process and the team building strategies of their favorite franchises. As we look forward to the IPL 2025 mega auction, the RTM card will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping the squads and adding to the excitement of the tournament.
