Wankhede’s Bold Choice: Tradition Over 50 Crores Ahead of World Cup 2023

Wankhede’s Bold Choice: In a surprising turn of events, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has chosen to forego a staggering Rs 50 crore windfall in anticipation of the ICC World Cup 2023. The decision, centered on preserving tradition, has sparked discussions about the delicate balance between heritage and revenue in the world of cricket.

Let’s have a look into the details of this intriguing choice: Wankhede – World Cup 2023

The Lucrative Offer

• Corporate giants, DreamSetGo and Cutting Edge, extended a remarkable proposal to the MCA: Rs 50 crores in exchange for three exclusive hospitality boxes at Wankhede Stadium.
• Each hospitality box was designed to accommodate 18 seats, complemented by a spacious foyer area.
• The proposed partnership was envisioned to span over a decade.

Wankhede’s Revenue So Far

• Wankhede Stadium, one of the prestigious venues for the ICC World Cup 2023, has already generated over Rs 100 crores through hospitality box sales.
• This substantial revenue underscores the financial opportunities associated with hosting global cricket events.

Tradition vs. Revenue

• The Vithal Divecha Pavilion, steeped in tradition, has been a sanctuary for MCA members over the years.
• The decision to decline the lucrative offer revolved around concerns within the MCA membership. Some feared that selling these hospitality boxes could limit MCA members’ access to tickets for World Cup matches.

Member Benefits and Resolution

• A crucial point of discussion was the resolution passed during the 2013 Annual General Meeting. According to this resolution, MCA members are entitled to a minimum of ten tickets during IPL matches.
• This allocation includes two tickets for the MCA Pavilion and two for the Vithal Divecha Stand Level 2.

Tradition Preserved

• In a unanimous decision, a few members of the MCA’s Apex Council, led by President Amol Kale, resolved to keep these particular seats exclusively for MCA members.
• This choice underscores the MCA’s commitment to preserving the traditions and privileges enjoyed by its members.
