Voltas Plans Up to 15% AC Price Hike — Here’s Why

Your next air conditioner might cost significantly more. Voltas, India’s leading AC brand with an 18% market share, has announced plans to raise AC prices by 5–15% in 2026 — and the reasons go deeper than just one factor.

Why Is Voltas Hiking AC Prices?

Copper prices, which hovered around $8,500 per tonne last year, have surged to $12,000–13,000 per tonne in 2026. Since copper is a significant component in every AC unit, the impact on production costs is substantial.

On top of that, the weakening rupee against the dollar is pushing up costs further, as several AC parts are still imported. New energy label compliance requirements this year have also demanded more copper, aluminium, and steel per unit — adding another 5–15% to per-unit production costs.

Voltas’ Strategy to Absorb the Shock

Rather than passing the entire burden to consumers, Voltas MD Mukundan Menon said the company is targeting to raise localisation levels from 70% to 90% over the next two years by expanding local sourcing for compressors, motors, PCBs, and copper and aluminium components — a move that should reduce import dependency significantly.

The company already has a production capacity of 30 lakh split AC units across two plants in Uttarakhand and Tamil Nadu, and is geared up to meet the anticipated demand surge. Despite the cost pressures, the industry expects AC sales to grow 15–20% over last year, which was exceptionally weak for the entire segment.
