Varanasi Synopsis Out: Mahesh Babu’s Rudhra Races Against a Killer Asteroid

An asteroid on collision course with one of India’s holiest cities, an ancient cosmic artifact, and a globetrotting chase across three continents — SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi just dropped its official synopsis, and it’s every bit as massive as fans hoped.

What’s the Story?

Set in the year 2027, the film follows archaeologist-explorer Rudhra (Mahesh Babu), who is recruited for a high-stakes mission to recover an ancient cosmic artifact after an asteroid named Shambhavi is discovered on a direct collision course with Varanasi. Joined by fierce historian and marksman Mandakini (Priyanka Chopra Jonas), Rudhra’s quest turns into a globe-spanning sci-fi thriller — racing through the jungles of Africa, the icy wastes of Antarctica, and the landscapes of Europe — all while being pursued by tech-genius villain Kumbha (Prithviraj Sukumaran). The key to stopping the catastrophe lies buried in the city’s mythical past.

Varanasi : Overview

A Rajamouli-Sized Ambition

Beyond playing Rudhra, Mahesh Babu has confirmed he’ll also portray Lord Ram in one of the film’s episodes, tying the sci-fi adventure back to Indian mythology — a narrative device echoing the ancient city Varanasi‘s real-world status as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, revered for its deep spiritual and historical significance. The production, mounted on a massive scale with extensive VFX and international shooting schedules, is one of the most anticipated Indian films in years — following Rajamouli’s record-breaking run with RRR.

What’s Next for the Cast?

Rajamouli recently confirmed the film is on track to wrap production by October 2026, keeping it on schedule for its April 2027 release. Mahesh Babu was last seen in Guntur Kaaram, while Priyanka Chopra Jonas continues to balance her international slate alongside this epic.
