Valve recently explored the idea of a new Steam Deck gadget, implying that it could be a couple of years away. Valve’s portable handheld gaming PC has been a hardware sensation, but discussions about the Steam Deck’s successor were murky prior to this interview. This new information offers some light on the console’s future.

The handheld device was released to widespread praise, with some hailing it as one of the best consoles of 2023, capable of running PC-exclusive titles in the comfort of a device similar to a Nintendo Switch.

Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffais highlighted the company’s ambition for the Steam Deck 2 and assured that the replacement will not appear until at least the end of 2025, if not later.

The most recent leak seems to indicate that there will be no news on the Steam Deck 2 very soon. Despite the desire for a fresh iteration, Griffais stressed Valve’s commitment to keeping a stable performance target for developers. According to him, the goal is to ensure that every Steam Deck can play the same games with little performance variances. Valve is cautious about changing performance levels since any adjustments must result in a significant boost while maintaining power efficiency and battery life.
