Vaibhav Sooryavanshi & Sanju Samson in India’s Asian Games 2026 Probable List — No Suryakumar Yadav or Shubman Gill

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi: The IPL hasn’t even fully wound down, yet Indian cricket’s selectors are already making big calls about the future — and the 30-member probable list for Asian Games 2026 tells a fascinating story about where Indian cricket is headed. There’s one jaw-dropping inclusion, and two very significant omissions.

The Teenager Forces His Way In

One of the biggest talking points from the preliminary group is the inclusion of 15-year-old batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose remarkable IPL 2026 campaign forced his way into national selection discussions, amassing 776 runs across the tournament. After breaking Chris Gayle’s all-time sixes record and smashing a joint-fastest playoff fifty, it would have been harder to leave him out than put him in.

The Notable Absentees

T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav and Test/ODI skipper Shubman Gill have both been excluded from the probables list. The BCCI has already sent the list to the Indian Olympic Association for the Games in Aichi-Nagoya.

Suryakumar’s absence isn’t surprising — he is no longer in contention for the 2028 T20 World Cup or Los Angeles Olympics. Meanwhile, with Gill likely to lead the team in ODIs ahead of the 2027 World Cup, he hasn’t been picked for the Asian Games squad either.

Who Will Captain? The Three Contenders

The captaincy candidates in the Asian Games list are Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, and Tilak Varma — a sign that India is genuinely building fresh leadership for the next generation of multi-format cricket.

The Scheduling Challenge Behind It All

It has been pre-decided that the BCCI will need to select two separate T20 teams, as India’s home white-ball series against West Indies overlaps partly with the Asian Games. The West Indies series comprises eight white-ball games — three ODIs and five T20Is — between September 27 and October 17, while the men’s cricket event at the Asian Games runs between September 24 and October 3.

Jasprit Bumrah has also made it to the longlist but is unlikely to travel, as he will be prioritising the ODI format with the 2027 World Cup in mind.

India’s Asian Games 2026 probable list is more than a squad announcement — it’s a blueprint. Sooryavanshi’s inclusion signals a fearless embrace of youth, while the absence of Suryakumar and Gill signals a clear-eyed vision for what India’s T20 future looks like. The next chapter of Indian cricket is being written — and it looks very exciting indeed. 🌟
