Donald Trump’s recent statements at the World Economic Forum in Davos have sparked controversy after claiming the United States “gave Greenland back to Denmark after World War II.” But does this version align with historical reality?
The Truth About Greenland’s Sovereignty
Trump’s claim is built on a false premise. The United States never owned Greenland, meaning it couldn’t have “given it back” to anyone. Before, during, and after World War II, Greenland remained under Danish sovereignty—a fact recognized internationally for decades.
According to the official U.S. State Department archives, there was never a transfer of territorial ownership of Greenland to the United States.
What Actually Happened During WWII?
| Year | Event | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| 1940 | Nazi Germany invades Denmark | Greenland isolated from Denmark |
| 1941 | U.S.-Denmark defense agreement | U.S. establishes military bases (no sovereignty transfer) |
| 1945 | WWII ends | Greenland remains Danish; U.S. reduces military presence |
| 1946 | Truman’s purchase attempt | Denmark rejects the offer |
| 1951 | New defense agreement (NATO era) | U.S. maintains bases like Thule (now Pituffik Space Base) |
When Nazi Germany invaded Denmark in April 1940, Greenland became isolated. To prevent German control, the Danish ambassador in Washington signed a 1941 agreement allowing the U.S. to defend Greenland and establish military bases. This was a military and defensive arrangement—not a political or territorial transfer.
The 1946 Purchase Attempt: The Real Story
The only documented attempt by the U.S. to acquire Greenland occurred in 1946, when President Harry Truman offered to purchase the island. Denmark firmly rejected the proposal, and the matter was permanently closed.

Why This Matters Today
Trump’s Davos remarks reflect ongoing geopolitical interests in the Arctic region:
- Strategic control of Arctic sea routes
- Military positioning during great power competition
- Access to natural resources and rare earth minerals
- Climate change opening new shipping lanes
However, using historical revisionism to support modern policy arguments undermines diplomatic credibility. Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has consistently affirmed Greenland’s status within the Kingdom of Denmark.
Greenland’s Current Status
Today, Greenland enjoys significant autonomy while remaining part of the Kingdom of Denmark. The territory has its own government, competencies, and recognized self-governance—facts that cannot be rewritten regardless of political narratives.
