The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has launched its inaugural free course on the global online learning platform Coursera (https://www.coursera.org/). Titled the “Global MOOC on the Ethics of AI,” the program was developed in collaboration with LG AI Research and aims to provide universal access to education on responsible artificial intelligence development and deployment.

UNESCO and Coursera Partner: Overview

The initiative follows UNESCO’s establishment of the first global framework on AI ethics, a set of standards for responsible AI usage endorsed by 193 countries. As AI adoption accelerates across sectors, the new course is designed to translate these principles into actionable practices for individuals and institutions worldwide.

“Principles alone do not build ethical AI, people do,” stated Prof. Khaled El-Enany, Director General of UNESCO. “Through this course, UNESCO is taking the next step in its leadership on AI ethics, translating the Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence into practical learning that empowers people to apply ethical principles throughout the AI lifecycle.”

The nine-hour course focuses on equipping learners to identify ethical risks, weigh competing priorities, and make informed decisions regarding AI design, usage, and governance. It draws on insights from experts at prominent institutions including Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Toronto, and the Alan Turing Institute, emphasizing real-world applications and hands-on projects.

Dr. Lim Woo-hyung, Co-Head of LG AI Research, highlighted the practical imperative: “The real work is to carry ethics through the entire lifecycle—from product development to service operation. We hope this MOOC gives working developers and researchers the practical foundation to build a trustworthy AI ecosystem and turn responsible innovation into an industry-wide habit rather than an aspiration.”

The program requires no advanced technical knowledge, making it accessible to a broad audience, including university students, researchers, policymakers, technology leaders, and professionals across various sectors. It is available in 11 languages, including Hindi, to maximize its global reach.

Marni Baker Stein, Chief Content Officer at Coursera, commented on the collaboration: “This free course, developed with LG AI Research, will help learners and institutions around the world make more informed decisions about how AI is designed, deployed, and governed. Together, we’re expanding global access to high-quality education on one of the most important issues of our time.”

Upon completing the course, learners are expected to possess the understanding necessary to make key decisions that promote the responsible and equitable study, construction, and adoption of AI technologies. This development marks a significant step in addressing the ethical considerations of emerging technology trends and further contributes to global discussions on digital responsibility.
