Some villains change. Ultron just pretends to. A new report on Marvel’s upcoming VisionQuest reveals that the AI’s seemingly reformed, mentor-like persona is nothing more than a long con — and his true goal is exactly what it was 11 years ago: taking over Vision’s body.

What Ultron Is Actually Planning?

VisionQuest picks up with White Vision on a journey of self-discovery after being reprogrammed by SWORD and later saved by his WandaVision-born counterpart. Along the way, he’s guided by a cast of MCU AI characters living inside his mindspace — including Ultron, whom Vision spared rather than destroyed back in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

That mercy appears to have backfired. According to a set-visit report from Empire, Ultron eventually finds a way to seize control of Vision’s body in the real world, trapping Vision and the other AI characters inside his own mind in the process.

Straight From the Cast and Crew

Showrunner Terry Matalas confirmed the dynamic isn’t as wholesome as it looks on the surface, explaining that Ultron sees himself as something of a father figure to Vision, largely because his original ambition was always to claim that very body.

Paul Bettany echoed a similarly unsettling read on their relationship, describing their conversations as strangely therapeutic even though Vision has to constantly remind himself of who he’s really talking to.

Why This Twist Actually Works?

Giving Ultron a redemption arc only to reveal it as manipulation is a clever way to honor the character’s comic book reputation as one of Marvel’s most calculating villains. It also raises the emotional stakes significantly — if Ultron succeeds, he doesn’t just threaten Vision, but potentially Vision’s fragile new relationship with his son, Tommy.

For fans who felt Ultron’s live-action debut in 2015 didn’t do the character justice, this deeper, more manipulative version may finally deliver.
