The best presentation of the concept is seen in the Marvel movies taking place in the multiverse. According to this concept, our universe is not alone, and is accompanied by various other parallel universes, hence the name multiverse.

Now according to this theory, all the parallel universes are the same and have similar conditions even the characters are the same. However, there can be some variations, but predominantly all of them have the same characters with the same faces.

It feels exciting, right? Well, this is how the concept of the multiverse is being used in various places. It is even introduced in video games, and Trinity Fusion is the best example of that.
