Tribeca 25 Is Netflix’s Love Letter To A City That Refused To Give Up

A festival born from grief, and 25 years later, it’s still bringing people together. Netflix is set to premiere Tribeca 25, a documentary chronicling the quarter-century history of the Tribeca Festival, on September 11, 2026. The date isn’t a coincidence. The festival was founded by Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal in the aftermath of 9/11, as a way to bring people back to Lower Manhattan when the neighborhood needed healing the most.

The Story Behind Tribeca 25

Directed by Matt Tyrnauer, known for documentaries like Studio 54 and Where’s My Roy Cohn?, the film traces Tribeca’s origins back to a “Dinner Downtown” gathering in November 2001, where De Niro and Rosenthal realized storytelling could help a grieving city find its way back to life. De Niro recalled watching the Twin Towers from his office window for years before their absence became impossible to ignore, while Rosenthal described a conversation with a grieving Con Edison worker that crystallized why the festival needed to exist.

What began as a five-day showcase featuring 150 films chosen from 13,000 submissions has since grown into a launchpad for major filmmaking talent, having hosted early premieres from directors like Jon M. Chu, Nia DaCosta, Ryan Coogler, and Damien Chazelle.

Tribeca 25 : Overview

The documentary also features reflections from cultural figures including Michael Bloomberg, Graydon Carter, and Sheila Nevins, offering a wide lens on how the festival shaped both the independent film industry and New York’s post-9/11 recovery.
