When it comes to celebrating football excellence, few accolades shine as brilliantly as the Ballon d’Or. This prestigious award, presented annually by the French news magazine France Football since 1956, has been a beacon of recognition for the world’s finest footballers. In this article, we’ll delve into the history of the Ballon d’Or and explore the remarkable journeys of the top five players who have received the most nominations for this coveted honour.

A Brief History of the Ballon d’Or

Before we dive into the list of football luminaries, it’s essential to understand the illustrious history of the Ballon d’Or. Conceived by sports writers Gabriel Hanot and Jacques Ferran, this award was initially limited to European players, known as the European Footballer of the Year award. However, in 1995, it expanded its scope to include players from all corners of the globe who plied their trade in European clubs.

Over the years, the voting process evolved, with coaches and national team captains joining football journalists in determining the winner. The award’s global reach was fully realized in 2007 when all professional footballers worldwide became eligible to receive this prestigious accolade. In 2022, France Football implemented changes, shifting the focus from achievements in a calendar year to performance during a football season, and limiting voting eligibility to countries in the top 100 of the FIFA World Ranking.
