4. 2021: PIF for Newcastle, £300m

Saudi Arabia’s PIF acquired Newcastle United in 2021, making them the richest owners in football. However, they haven’t splurged the cash, and have instead opted for some very smart recruits. As a result, they are pushing to qualify for the Champions League only a year after the takeover.

While there was a lot of success under Sir Alex Ferguson, the departure of the legendary manager saw the club fall from grace and endure a six-year wait for silverware between 2017 and 2023. With the Glazers putting United up for sale again, they could soon be number one on the list.

1. 2022: Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital for Chelsea, £4 billion

After Russia invaded Ukraine, Roman Abramovich was compelled to sell his cherished Chelsea. Todd Boehly, the owner of LA Dodgers, and Clearlake Capital emerged as the victors in the bidding competition, and they have subsequently made substantial investments in the club. They have recruited Graham Potter to replace Thomas Tuchel and have also made significant expenditures on new players to guide the club’s future progress.
