Top 5 goalkeepers in Europe ahead of the 2021-22 season

Following Italy’s Euro 2020 victory against England in the finals, Gigio Donnarumma was given the Player of the Tournament award. He became the first goalkeeper ever to receive the award, and that showed exactly how important goalkeepers can be for their teams.

With that said, here are the top five goalkeepers in the world right now:

5. Ederson

The Manchester City goalkeeper won his second successive Golden Glove in 20/21 by keeping 19 clean sheets in the Premier League. He became the first goalkeeper in history to achieve this feat, and also benched Alisson as part of the Brazil squad in Copa America, although falling short in the finals.

4. Keylor Navas

For all the marvellous performances he puts in, Navas is arguably the most underrated goalkeeper in Europe. The Costa Rica international was signed for €13 million by PSG in a remarkable transfer move, and he will now compete with Gigio Donnarumma for game time at the French capital.

3. Gigio Donnarumma

The Italy international was outstanding for the Azzurri in the Euros, and at 22, has already racked up 200 club appearances for AC Milan. He saved penalties from Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka in the final to deny England their first European Championship, and win the tournament for the underdogs after half a century. He was recently announced as a PSG player, and he is expected to become the best goalkeeper in the world over the next few years.

2. Thibaut Courtois

Courtois’ struggles at Real Madrid seem like a long time ago. The Belgian has found his form at Real Madrid and helped them win the 19/20 La Liga title through his performances. He had a save percentage of over 80%, and will surely be a vital part of Carlo Ancelotti’s plans this coming season.

1. Jan Oblak

Oblak helped Atletico Madrid edge out Barcelona and Real Madrid in the race for the La Liga title. He was chosen as the player of the season for Atletico Madrid as they won the league title after seven years. Oblak also had the most number of clean sheets in the league, going 18 matches without conceding a goal in domestic competition.
