Unrecognizable and Unhinged: Everything We Know About Tom Cruise’s Wildest Role Yet in ‘Digger’

Forget stunts and fighter jets — Tom Cruise’s next big swing trades action-hero heroics for prosthetics, a Southern drawl, and an oil tycoon losing his grip on reality. Digger, his first collaboration with Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, just dropped its first full trailer, and fans are already calling it his strangest role in decades.

Here’s everything confirmed so far.

Digger: Overview

What Is Digger About?

Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, described in the official synopsis as “the most powerful man in the world,” who launches a frantic mission to prove he’s humanity’s savior before the very disaster he caused destroys everything. Warner Bros. is billing it as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions” — Rockwell is an aging, corpulent energy tycoon whose company unleashes an ecological catastrophe, and Cruise is reportedly nearly unrecognizable in the role, sporting a comb-over, a thick Southern accent, and a noticeably heavier build.

A Stacked, Star-Studded Cast

Cruise leads an ensemble that reads like an awards-season wishlist. John Goodman plays the President of the United States, while Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Emma D’Arcy, Michael Stuhlbarg, Robert John Burke, and Burn Gorman round out the supporting cast. It’s the kind of lineup that signals serious awards ambitions behind the film’s absurdist premise.

The Iñárritu Connection

This marks Iñárritu’s first English-language film since The Revenant, and reportedly the idea for Digger has been brewing for nearly nine years. He directed and co-wrote the screenplay alongside Alexander Dinelaris Jr., Nicolás Giacobone, and Sabina Berman. The film was shot on VistaVision, a format most famously associated with classic-era filmmaking, giving it a distinctive visual texture unlike Cruise’s usual blockbuster fare.

At CinemaCon, Iñárritu described the years-long journey of bringing Cruise into the role: he first pitched the idea nine years ago, and it took two more years before Cruise agreed to become Digger Rockwell. Cruise, for his part, called the collaboration “the ne plus ultra across the board in terms of writing, production, and performance.”

More background on the film’s development and cast is available on its official Wikipedia entry.
