This New BL Doesn’t Waste Time — And That’s Exactly Why It Works

Most Japanese high school BLs love to drag their feet. Slow glances, months of denial, a confession that finally lands somewhere around episode eight. “Hold on, Harutora-Kun” throws that playbook out entirely — and honestly, it’s refreshing.

The setup starts familiar enough: Kishida Sui (Nakagawa Tsubasa) is a sophomore who wears a literal mask around his dorm to survive being outed as gay, hiding a bright persona over real hurt. It’s a common thread in boys’ love media, but the execution here feels distinctly its own. Then his new roommate, freshman Kurobe Harutora (Sakuragi Masaya), walks in — sincere, blunt, and completely unfazed by subtlety. What follows in just two episodes is a whirlwind: a misunderstanding, a public jab, a surprise party, an unplanned first kiss, and confessions that arrive before most shows would even hint at chemistry.

BL Drama: Overview

Fast Doesn’t Mean Shallow

What makes the pacing work is that it never feels rushed emotionally, even when the plot sprints. Sui’s fear of being abandoned again — after a past roommate did exactly that — makes the kiss and subsequent confessions land with real weight rather than convenience. Harutora’s sincerity, meanwhile, keeps tipping between endearing and slightly overwhelming, which feels true to a character who’s young and figuring out his own feelings in real time.

The dorm itself functions almost like a supporting character — a space that’s been hostile to Sui for so long that Harutora’s kindness inside it feels genuinely disruptive, in the best way. Whether the drama can sustain that emotional honesty as the relationship deepens is the real question going forward.

If the premiere is any indication, “Hold on, Harutora-Kun” isn’t interested in slow burns — it’s betting on emotional payoff early, then seeing what the characters do with it. So far, that gamble is paying off.
