In a groundbreaking transfer, Olympique Lyon has confirmed the acquisition of Thiago Almada on loan from Brazilian Serie A champions Botafogo. This move highlights the strength of the Eagle Football Group’s multi-club model.

The Argentine attacking midfielder was a standout at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 Olympics. Almada will remain with the French club until June 30, 2025.

Multi-Club Network Paves the Way for Almada’s Move

The 23-year-old’s arrival at Lyon represents a strategic collaboration within the Eagle Football Group, led by John Textor. Textor’s sports conglomerate also owns Premier League side Crystal Palace and Belgian club RWB Molenbeek, emphasizing its global reach. This free loan transfer exemplifies the synergies possible within a multi-club ownership structure.

Having joined Botafogo in July 2023 for a record-setting $21 million MLS outgoing transfer fee—a figure potentially rising to $30 million with add-ons—Almada’s rapid ascent has captivated football fans worldwide.

A Stellar Career Filled with Trophies

Almada’s resume speaks volumes about his talent and impact on the pitch. With Atlanta United in Major League Soccer, the Argentine scored 26 goals and provided 24 assists in 80 appearances, cementing his status as a key playmaker. His subsequent move to Botafogo proved equally successful, as he played a pivotal role in their national Serie A triumph and Copa Libertadores victory, securing qualification for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

His international career is equally impressive. As part of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad, Almada contributed to La Albiceleste’s success on the global stage. He followed that with an Olympic campaign in 2024, netting two goals and further solidifying his reputation as a world-class midfielder.

Social Media Announcement with a Twist

Lyon’s announcement of Almada’s arrival was anything but conventional. The club shared a humorous social media post featuring fellow Argentine Nicolas Tagliafico.

In the post, a fabricated text message from Lionel Messi playfully advised Almada, “Don’t listen to Cristiano, Ligue 1 is incredible,” taking a sly jab at Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent claim that the Saudi Pro League surpasses Ligue 1. The video added an entertaining touch to a significant transfer.

What’s Next for Almada at Lyon?

With Almada already in France, he has begun training with Lyon, aiming to make his Ligue 1 debut in the coming weeks. The Argentine could feature in their upcoming match against Toulouse on January 18 as Lyon seeks to climb from their current sixth-place standing and push for Champions League qualification.

The attacking midfielder’s inclusion in Lyon’s UEFA Europa League squad is also a possibility. European competition regulations allow for three new registrations ahead of the February 6 deadline. Lyon’s next Europa League fixture is a high-stakes clash against Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce on January 23.

Seventh Argentine to Grace Lyon’s Roster

Almada’s arrival at Lyon adds to the club’s storied history with Argentine players, making him the seventh to don their colors. With six caps and two goals for Argentina’s national team, the 23-year-old’s reputation precedes him. His creativity, vision, and goal-scoring ability make him a vital asset for Lyon as they look to achieve domestic and European success.

As the January transfer window heats up, Thiago Almada’s move to Lyon is shaping up to be one of the most significant stories. His proven track record and undeniable talent have the potential to propel the French giants to new heights in the coming seasons.
