Good Reviews, Empty Theaters — Why “Bandar” Couldn’t Turn Praise Into Profit

Sometimes a film does everything right on paper and still loses at the box office. Anurag Kashyap’s Bandar, starring Bobby Deol, wrapped its entire theatrical run at just Rs. 3.50 crore nett — despite walking away with genuinely positive reviews from both critics and audiences.

Where It All Went Wrong

Bandar opened modestly at Rs. 50 lakh and crossed Rs. 2 crore by the end of its first weekend. But instead of building momentum the way strong word-of-mouth usually does, the film flatlined almost immediately, closing its run far sooner than expected.

Why A Well-Reviewed Film Still Flopped

The biggest culprit wasn’t quality — it was visibility. Bandar released on limited screens with minimal promotion, going up directly against Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai and the Ram Charan blockbuster Peddi. Against that kind of competition and near-zero marketing push, even strong word-of-mouth had little runway to convert into ticket sales.

It’s a pattern increasingly visible across the industry: audiences are growing comfortable waiting for OTT rather than showing up for smaller films without pre-release buzz, a shift that’s reshaping how mid-budget titles are positioned within India’s evolving film distribution landscape.

What’s The Film Actually About?

Bandar follows Sameer Mehra (Bobby Deol), a fading star clinging to his past glory, whose attempt to rebuild his life collapses when a former girlfriend files a serious allegation against him — pulling him into a messy trial shaped as much by social media as by the courtroom. Written by Sudip Sharma and Abhishek Banerjee, the film deliberately avoids the standard Bollywood courtroom formula.

With its theatrical run over, all attention now shifts to Bandar‘s digital premiere, where its strong reviews may finally find the wider audience the big screen couldn’t deliver.
