The World’s Tallest College Basketball Player Just Found His Perfect Home — And It Could Change Everything

Standing 7-foot-9 and weighing 305 pounds, Olivier Rioux is college basketball’s most jaw-dropping physical specimen. But being the tallest player in NCAA history hasn’t automatically translated into court time — until now. Rioux is officially leaving Florida for UC Irvine, and this transfer might be the turning point his career desperately needed.

Olivier Rioux — Player Profile at a Glance

Why Rioux Is Leaving Florida

Rioux spent two seasons with the Florida Gators — a powerhouse program that captured the 2025 national championship. The team was stacked, and therein lay the problem. Despite being arguably the most physically unique player on any roster in America, Rioux appeared in just 11 games in 2025-26, averaging a mere 1.5 minutes per outing and scoring only seven total points. For a player with his extraordinary upside, that simply wasn’t enough.

When you’ve been recognised as the tallest teenager in the world at just 15 years old — measuring 7-foot-5 before he was even fully grown — you deserve a stage that fits your potential.

Why UC Irvine Is the Right Move

This isn’t just a transfer — it’s a strategic career decision. UC Irvine head coach Russell Turner has a proven track record with elite-sized big men. He developed Mamadou N’Diaye, a 7-foot-6 center, into a multiple Big West Defensive Player of the Year and the program’s all-time blocks leader. That blueprint maps perfectly onto Rioux’s strengths.

The Big West Conference also presents far less physically imposing frontcourts compared to the SEC, giving Rioux genuine room to make an impact on both ends of the floor. UC Irvine itself is no pushover — the program went 23-12 last season and claimed the Big West regular-season title. Adding Rioux could push them to a whole new level.

What to Expect Next Season

The priorities for Rioux at UC Irvine are simple: development, confidence, and opportunity — three things that were in short supply at Florida. In a system built for big men, with a coach who knows exactly how to maximise a towering center, Rioux has every chance to become a disruptive defensive force and a matchup nightmare in the paint.

Height alone doesn’t win games in today’s fast-paced college game, but with the right coaching and a defined role, Rioux could finally start converting his rare physical tools into real production. Keep up with his journey at TechnoSports’ basketball coverage hub.
