Loyalty in Bollywood sometimes costs a debut. Choreographer-turned-director Ahmed Khan has opened up about a shelved project that could have launched his directing career alongside Shah Rukh Khan — and the reason it fell apart says a lot about friendship in the film industry.
Long before Baaghi 3 and Welcome To The Jungle, Ahmed wanted his directorial debut to star SRK, with AR Rahman composing the music and a serious script titled Sabr already in place.
SRK Movie Overview

| Ahmed’s Actual Debut | Lakeer – Forbidden Lines (2004) |
Why the Film Got Shelved

According to Ahmed, Shah Rukh genuinely liked the script and wanted to do it. But there was a catch — SRK had long promised Farah Khan, his close friend, that he’d back her directorial debut first. Ahmed admitted he was eager to get his film moving quickly, but Shah Rukh’s loyalty to Farah simply came first.
Around that time, Farah was developing her own script — one that eventually became Main Hoon Na. SRK chose to dedicate his time and dates to her project instead, honoring the earlier commitment.
No Bad Blood, Just Bad Timing
Rather than holding a grudge, Ahmed respected the decision and moved on, eventually making his own directorial debut with Lakeer – Forbidden Lines in 2004 — the same year Main Hoon Na became a massive hit and cemented one of Bollywood’s most iconic actor-director pairings.
Ahmed hasn’t fully closed the door on the idea either, hinting that the story isn’t necessarily over for good.
Loyalty and long-term collaborations between actors and directors have long shaped Bollywood’s creative partnerships — a dynamic explored further on Wikipedia’s overview of Bollywood.
