How Did Timo Tjahjanto Confirm The Shadow Strays 2?
The news of a sequel came through Tjahjanto himself, who posted on Instagram and Twitter a picture of knives, swords, and guns surrounding a bloody Netflix N on snow. On Instagram, the caption was “She will return.” Meanwhile, on X, the caption was “Shadows will return.” IMDb
That’s the kind of announcement that hits harder than most formal press releases. These posts were released a day after Deadline revealed that Tjahjanto had boarded Miramax’s sequel to The Beekeeper, which would see Jason Statham return. IMDb So the man is extremely busy — and clearly committed to both franchises simultaneously.
On February 17th, the director posted: “Doing another Hollywood project this year, but I promised myself after that it’s gonna be either The Big 4 or The Shadow Strays sequel.” IMDb The fans voted with their viewing hours — and The Shadow Strays won.
Why Netflix Greenlit the Sequel — The Numbers Tell the Story
The project marked Netflix’s fourth major collaboration with Tjahjanto, following May the Devil Take You, The Night Comes for Us, and The Big 4. The film first premiered at TIFF before hitting Netflix globally on October 17th, telling the story of a young assassin who defies her mentor to save a boy from a ruthless crime syndicate. IMDb
The performance was exceptional. The movie entered 87 countries’ top 10s, spent four weeks in the global non-English movie charts, picking up 61.20 million hours watched equating to 25.3 million views. By the end of 2024, it was the 58th most watched Netflix movie in the second half of the year, with 72.3 million hours watched — 29.9 million views. IMDb
Netflix was jubilant at the movie’s performance, following up with a news post about it becoming a “global hit.” IMDb
Tjahjanto’s visceral, hyper-kinetic action style is perfectly suited to Netflix’s global action appetite. To understand the rich tradition of Indonesian action cinema he draws from, Wikipedia’s article on Indonesian cinema gives great context on what makes this filmmaking culture so distinctive.
