What Is The Ricky Gervais Show?

Here’s the beautiful simplicity of it — this animated series is essentially Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant sitting around laughing at their friend Karl Pilkington. That’s it. And yet it became one of the funniest things ever put on television.

Born from the duo’s record-breaking podcasts and XFM radio shows, The Ricky Gervais Show brought Karl’s spectacularly unique worldview to life through classic Hanna-Barbera-style animation. Segment by segment — “Monkey News,” “Karl’s Diary,” philosophical debates about whether monkeys could ever run a hotel — the show turned an ordinary man’s extraordinarily bizarre thoughts into pure comedy gold.

Clips from the show are still going viral on YouTube and TikTok in 2026. That’s the staying power of Karl Pilkington.

Why This Netflix Addition Matters Right Now

Netflix has been steadily building the ultimate Ricky Gervais universe on its platform. Fans can already stream After Life (all three seasons), Derek, and stand-up specials including Humanity, Supernature, Armageddon, and the recent Mortality. Adding the animated show completes the collection perfectly — especially with Gervais’s brand-new adult animated series Alley Cats also expected on Netflix in 2026.

This licensing move is part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s growing content deal with Netflix, following titles like Insecure and The Pacific already finding new audiences on the platform. For fans who missed The Ricky Gervais Show during its HBO run, this is the ideal entry point.
