The Map of Longing Review: A Tender Grief Story That Plays It Too Safe

Grief, first love, and a box of mysterious dares — Netflix’s new Spanish YA drama has all the right ingredients for a tearjerker. The Map of Longing mostly delivers on the emotion, even if it never quite pushes past the boundaries of its own comfort zone.

What The Show Is About

Adapted from Alice Kellen’s bestselling novel, the six-episode series follows Greta (Alicia Falcó), a young woman conceived specifically to be a compatible cell donor for her older sister Lucy (Georgina Amorós), who has leukemia. The donation saves Lucy’s life but leaves Greta severely immunocompromised, shaping her into something of a loner. When Lucy eventually passes away, Greta is left unmoored — until a mysterious stranger named Will (Pablo Álvarez) appears, carrying a box Lucy left behind called The Map of Longing: an Advent-calendar-style set of challenges the two must complete together in her memory.

The Map of Longing: Overview

What Works, What Doesn’t

The show is smart to keep its focus tight on the trio of Greta, Lucy, and Will, using flashback-style dialogue between the sisters to walk the audience through Greta’s shifting emotional state. That intimacy makes for an easy, accessible watch, and Falcó and Amorós’s chemistry carries much of the show’s emotional weight. But the tight focus is also a limitation: subplots involving Greta’s absent father and her mother’s grief-therapy group are introduced and then abandoned, and Will’s own backstory arrives late as more of a plot complication than a genuine character exploration, leaving him a bit thin as a love interest.

Should You Watch It?

Despite ts coming-of-age structure not straying far from genre convention, the series remains a fine showcase for its 23-year-old lead, whose performance elevates material that could otherwise feel overly sentimental. It’s a warm, uncomplicated summer watch for fans of YA romance, even if it won’t be remembered as one of the genre’s more surprising entries. The show’s emotional core is also grounded in a real medical condition — you can read more about leukemia on Wikipedia for context on what Lucy’s character battles onscreen.
