The K-Drama That Got Banned, Boycotted & Still Hit 68M Hours on Netflix — Teach You a Lesson Controversy Explained

Before a single episode streamed, Teach You a Lesson had already survived a webtoon cancellation, boycott calls from teachers’ unions, and a casting fallout. Yet somehow, it became one of Netflix’s biggest K-drama hits of 2026. Here’s everything you need to know.

What Is Teach You a Lesson?

Teach You a Lesson is a 10-episode Netflix original K-drama that premiered globally on June 5, 2026. It is set in a fictional version of South Korea where school discipline has completely collapsed — teachers have no power, influential parents shield students from consequences, and youth gangs effectively run school campuses.

The show stars Kim Moo-yeol as Na Hwa-jin, a former special forces operative who becomes a field inspector for the Educational Rights Protection Bureau (ERPB) — a fictional government task force authorized to use physical intervention to break down school violence, institutional corruption, and abusive student hierarchies. Jin Ki-joo plays fellow inspector Im Han Lim, and Lee Sung-min portrays Education Minister Choi Kang Seok.

The Controversy, Explained

1. The Webtoon Source Was Already Banned in America

The original Naver webtoon Get Schooled drew widespread accusations of racism for its portrayal of a mixed-race Black student as a violent bully targeting Korean classmates, and was also criticised for seemingly glorifying violence, corporal punishment, and public humiliation. In 2023, Naver Webtoon removed Get Schooled from its North American platform entirely in response to the backlash, while continuing to make it available in South Korea.

2. Teachers’ Unions Demanded Netflix Cancel It

The Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union (KTU) publicly demanded that Netflix cancel the adaptation, citing concerns about the show’s portrayal of violence and the disrespect it shows to teachers. Numerous teachers’ and education workers’ unions also called for the suspension of the show, alleging that the story glorified corporal punishment and cast a bad light on the educational system.

3. Cast Members Faced Fan Pressure

Fans released statements asking actors to decline roles in the series, with Jin Ki-joo specifically targeted after joining the cast.

How Netflix and the Creators Responded

Director Hong Jong-chan deliberately removed the webtoon’s most divisive elements and approached the adaptation with extreme caution, describing the core appeal as the fantasy of an organization that stands beside victims and supports them. The creative team made a conscious effort to ensure the show wouldn’t be consumed merely as mindless entertainment or a cheap revenge fantasy.

Why 68M People Still Watched It

The show blends revenge fantasy, action, social drama, and comedy across 10 episodes tackling bullying, corruption, academic pressure, cyber harassment, gambling, and the failures of institutions meant to protect students.

The fantasy of seeing wrongdoers punished directly has turned the series into a form of emotional release for audiences exhausted by real-world headlines.
