What’s the Sequel About?

The sequel adapts the second book in McFadden’s Housemaid trilogy, following Millie as she takes a new job keeping house for the mysterious Garrick family — only to discover the truth behind a locked door that hides secrets far darker than her own.

The premise is pure psychological thriller gold. The book’s chilling setup has Millie being warned by her new employer Douglas Garrick to never go into the guest bedroom, telling her his wife is very ill — which only deepens Millie’s growing dread about what lies behind that door. Bleeding Cool

Cast: Who’s Returning and Who’s New?

Sydney Sweeney returns as Millie alongside Michele Morrone, who also appeared in the first film — and Kirsten Dunst is joining the cast in what is shaping up to be a powerhouse pairing. The original film became a phenomenon — The Housemaid grossed $397.5 million worldwide on a budget of just $35 million Wikipedia, making the sequel one of Lionsgate’s most commercially certain bets.

The Housemaid’s Secret was officially greenlit in January 2026 while the first film was still in theaters, with Paul Feig expressing his dream of continuing across the full trilogy Gold Derby — and potentially adapting the novella The Housemaid’s Wedding in between. Smart Positioning Against the Blockbusters

Just as the first film found a massive female audience as counter-programming against Avatar: Fire & Ash, the sequel is being positioned against Avengers: Secret Wars and Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum — two overtly male-skewing tentpoles. It’s a proven strategy, and Lionsgate is clearly playing it smart again.
