Here’s your complete guide to the stars and characters bringing this psychological thriller to life.

The Housemaid Movie Overview

Main Cast & Characters

Sydney Sweeney as Millie Calloway

The Euphoria star plays Millie Calloway, an ex-convict desperate for a second chance who becomes the live-in housemaid for the Winchester family. Millie has a troubled past and accepts the position hoping for a fresh start, only to discover the household hides sinister secrets beneath its perfect façade.

Sweeney, Emmy-nominated for her work in Euphoria and The White Lotus, also serves as executive producer. Director Paul Feig praised her for striking “the perfect balance” in capturing Millie’s layered personality. She’s also set to star as professional boxer Christy Martin in the biopic Christy, releasing November 7, 2025.

Amanda Seyfried as Nina Winchester

Seyfried plays Nina Winchester, the elegant but unstable wife who harbors dark secrets. Nina hires Millie as the family’s live-in maid, but viewers quickly learn there’s far more happening behind the mansion’s walls than meets the eye.

The Emmy-winning actress (The Dropout) rose to fame with Mean Girls and Mamma Mia!. She also serves as executive producer alongside Sweeney. Her next project includes the lead role in The Testament of Ann Lee, releasing December 25, 2025.

Why This Cast Works Perfectly

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president Erin Westerman explained that Sweeney and Seyfried are “perfect for Millie and Nina—they’re both mysterious, nuanced, and incredibly skilled at becoming characters who don’t reveal everything right away”.

Director Paul Feig brings his signature touch to female-driven thrillers, having previously helmed A Simple Favor and its upcoming sequel. His collaboration with these talented actresses promises the same suspenseful, twist-filled storytelling that made both the book and his previous films massive successes.

The Novel’s Phenomenal Success

The novel spent 75 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and 98 weeks on Amazon’s bestsellers list, with a record-breaking half-billion pages read on Kindle. This massive popularity practically guaranteed a film adaptation, and McFadden herself expressed excitement about the “absolute perfect cast and director.”

What to Expect

The September 16 trailer teases a dark, suspenseful story set to a haunting version of Sabrina Carpenter’s “Please Please Please.” Quick glimpses show a terrified Seyfried, Sweeney’s mysterious character under arrest, and the twisted world inside the Winchester mansion—promising the same spine-chilling twists that made the book a global phenomenon.
