The Great King Munmu: Jang Hyuk’s Blood-Streaked War God Threatens Silla’s Dream

Some actors play villains. Jang Hyuk seems to become them. New stills from The Great King Munmu show him on a battlefield with a piercing stare, blood on his face and not a flicker of doubt. History buffs, take note.

The Great King Munmu: Snapshot

The Story Behind the Crown

The series traces how tiny Silla rose against stronger rivals, namely Goguryeo, Baekje and China’s Tang dynasty, to unify the Three Kingdoms of Korea. It’s a classic underdog tale, and every underdog needs a formidable opponent.

Yeon Gaesomun: Hero, Tyrant, Threat

Meet the man standing in Silla’s way. Jang Hyuk plays Yeon Gaesomun, Goguryeo’s war god. He comes from a family that held military power for three generations and earns hero status through sheer combat skill. But the same power that makes him admired also makes him feared.

When wary nobles try to eliminate him, he strikes back without mercy and seizes control of Goguryeo. Then he turns his gaze toward Silla, landing himself squarely at the center of the unification conflict.

Why the Stills Hit Hard?

One still shows him unshakably calm even with blood splattered across his face. It’s a single image that says more about his character than a page of dialogue. The team calls Jang Hyuk a “master of historical dramas,” and his commanding presence is expected to anchor the series from Yeon Gaesomun’s rise to his clash with Silla.
