‘The Debt Collector’ Review: Thai Action Cinema With a Bruised Heart

Netflix’s latest Thai import trades slick, familiar action-hero tropes for something grittier and more grounded. The Debt Collector, directed by Surapong Ploensang, follows a familiar revenge-thriller blueprint but grounds it in real socioeconomic stakes, resulting in a film that’s uneven but genuinely compelling in stretches.

What’s the Story?

Nadech Kugimiya stars as Num, a former debt collector for crime boss Madam Pin, fresh out of a ten-year prison sentence and now facing a terminal brain tumor. Trying to go straight as a delivery man, Num forms a bond with a street vendor and her granddaughter, only to witness them being harassed by loan-shark enforcers. What starts as protective instinct spirals into a full-blown return to violence, as Num decides to spend his remaining days settling old scores with the syndicate he once served.

The film’s strongest asset is its willingness to dig into the bleak, working-class world its characters occupy rather than leaning purely on style. Kugimiya anchors it well, balancing quiet guilt with sudden bursts of brutality. The story loses some momentum, however, when it shifts focus nearly an hour in to introduce a second lead, a police officer with his own tangled history with Num — a structural choice that stalls the pacing in an already lengthy 133-minute runtime.

Should You Watch It?

If you’re craving new Thai action cinema with a bit more emotional weight than the genre usually offers, The Debt Collector is a decent, if imperfect, watch — just don’t expect it to reach John Wick-level heights.
