One of Tamil cinema’s most private celebrity marriages is now making headlines for all the wrong reasons. After nearly 27 years together, reports emerged on February 27, 2026 that Thalapathy Vijay’s wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, has filed a divorce petition — and the alleged reasons behind it have shocked fans across India.
What Does the Divorce Petition Allegedly Claim?
According to circulating reports, Sangeetha’s petition reportedly alleges that Vijay had an extramarital affair with an unnamed actress, which she claims to have discovered back in April 2021. The petition reportedly states that despite his assurances to end the relationship, the affair allegedly continued — causing her severe emotional, mental, and reportedly physical distress.
The petition further claims Vijay restricted her personal freedom and financial security, continued travelling abroad and attending public events with the said actress, and that the actress’s social media posts — featuring her alongside Vijay — caused repeated public humiliation to Sangeetha and their children.
According to reports, the grounds cited include desertion, adultery, and mental cruelty. Sangeetha has reportedly sought both interim maintenance and permanent alimony. However, none of this has been officially confirmed.

Who Are Vijay and Sangeetha?
Sangeetha Sornalingam, originally a fan of Vijay, saw her admiration blossom into a relationship that led to their marriage in 1999. For nearly three decades, the couple kept their personal lives almost entirely away from the public eye — which makes these explosive reports all the more jarring for fans.
Their son, Jason Sanjay, is now stepping into cinema as a director, making his debut in Tamil films. It’s a bittersweet backdrop to what is now a very public unraveling of a once-quiet family life.
