Tamil Cinema Loses a Storyteller: Director-Cinematographer R. Chezhiyan Passes Away at 57

The Tamil film industry is mourning the loss of one of its most respected craftsmen. Acclaimed cinematographer, director, and author R. Chezhiyan passed away on July 10, 2026, in Chennai at the age of 57, after a prolonged battle with cancer.

R. Chezhiyan : A Career Built on Honest Storytelling

Born in Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu, Chezhiyan initially trained in civil engineering before following his passion for photography and storytelling. He made his independent debut as a cinematographer with 2007’s Kalloori and went on to shoot acclaimed films including Rettaisuzhi, Thenmerku Paruvakaatru, Magizhchi, Paradesi, and Joker — work known for capturing raw, lived-in realism.

He later stepped behind the camera as a director with his 2017 debut To Let, which earned widespread critical acclaim and screened at multiple international film festivals, cementing his reputation as a versatile filmmaker.

Beyond the Camera

Chezhiyan was also a respected writer and educator, authoring several books including Ulaga Cinema and running The Film School, where he mentored the next generation of filmmakers.

Industry Pays Tribute

Actor Vijay Sethupathi shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, while writer-producer Adham Bava remembered Chezhiyan’s warmth and his rare artistic contributions to Tamil cinema. Filmmaker M. Sasikumar also expressed his condolences, as tributes poured in from across the industry.
