Netflix’s new family drama “Unaccustomed Earth,” inspired by Jhumpa Lahiri’s internationally acclaimed short story collection, will premiere on December 17, bringing the author’s exploration of Indian American life across generations to the screen for the first time as a series.

The Story

The series follows Parul Chaudhury (Freida Pinto), a wife and mother who once gave up a college romance to honour her father’s wishes. Years later, after receiving a life-changing cancer diagnosis, she moves her family from India back to Cambridge, Massachusetts — the place she once felt most at home. Knowing her time may be limited, Parul begins pursuing the life she once set aside, a decision that reshapes not just her own path but ripples through her family and the wider Indian American community around her. When a long-buried connection between Parul and her past resurfaces, it sets off a chain of consequences that redraws relationships across the community.

Rather than adapting Lahiri’s short stories as separate, disconnected episodes, showrunner Madhuri Shekar has woven the collection’s various characters into a single, interconnected Indian American community, giving the show a more unified, ongoing narrative than the source material’s structure of standalone stories.

The Cast

Freida Pinto, internationally known for her breakout role in “Slumdog Millionaire,” leads as Parul, while Indian actor Siddharth — known for “Rang De Basanti,” “Bommarillu,” and this year’s “Chithha” — plays Amit, her long-lost love whose reappearance drives much of the season’s central conflict. The supporting ensemble includes Indraneil Sengupta as Jai, Parveen Kaur as Nina, Sarayu Blue as Ruma, Justin Bartha as Adam, Adi Roy as Kaushik, Iyla Sundarsingh Mckaig as Hema, and Jayant Kripalani as Pranab, alongside Ishita Bansal, Meera Simham, Ravi Kapoor, Swayam Bhatia, and Palomi Ghosh in additional roles.
