Speculation is building in film circles that Mahesh Babu could team up with acclaimed filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the first time, in what would be a major pan-India collaboration once the superstar wraps his current commitment to S.S. Rajamouli’s “Varanasi.” As of now, there is no official confirmation from either camp, and the reports remain firmly in rumor territory.

The Buzz

According to reports circulating in film industry circles, Bhansali — known for period epics like “Bajirao Mastani” and “Padmaavat” — has reportedly been looking to make a grand pan-India project with a leading Telugu star for some time. Names previously linked to that ambition included Allu Arjun, Jr NTR, and Ram Charan. The latest reports claim Bhansali has now met Mahesh Babu personally and narrated a story to him, with Tollywood circles suggesting the superstar is interested. However, no studio, production house, or either party involved has issued any official statement confirming a deal, casting, or even a finalized script.

Where Things Stand With Varanasi

Any potential Bhansali collaboration would come only after Mahesh Babu completes his current commitment to “Varanasi,” the S.S. Rajamouli-directed epic action-adventure in which he plays a dual role alongside Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran. The film, produced by Sri Durga Arts and Showing Business with music by M.M. Keeravani, is reportedly nearing the end of its shoot and is set for a worldwide release on April 7, 2027. Given the scale of that production, Mahesh Babu’s schedule is expected to remain tied up with “Varanasi” promotions and any remaining work for months to come, making an official Bhansali announcement, if it happens at all, unlikely in the immediate term.

Bhansali’s Wider Tollywood Push

The reported interest in Mahesh Babu isn’t happening in isolation. Bhansali has separately been linked to a large-scale mythological adventure with Dhanush, written by Vijayendra Prasad — the same writer behind “Varanasi” — and directed by PS Mithran, which has already generated comparisons to Rajamouli’s film due to overlapping thematic territory.

Trade observers have noted that Bhansali appears to be actively courting Tollywood’s biggest stars across multiple projects simultaneously, reflecting how significant the pan-India market has become even for a filmmaker historically rooted in Hindi cinema.

Why This Would Be Significant

If the reported meeting does translate into an actual project, it would mark Bhansali’s first-ever collaboration with Mahesh Babu and one of his most high-profile pan-India ventures to date. Bhansali’s reputation for opulent period storytelling paired with Mahesh Babu’s massive following across Telugu and pan-India audiences would make for one of Tollywood’s most closely watched director-actor pairings in recent memory. But until either side confirms anything concretely, the report should be treated as industry buzz rather than a done deal.

For now, this remains speculation rather than a confirmed collaboration. Mahesh Babu’s immediate focus stays on “Varanasi,” and any Bhansali project would need to clear the hurdles of a finalized script, dates, and official sign-off before it moves from rumor to reality.
