Some shows earn a second season quietly. “The Royals” earned it in just three weeks. Now, over a year after its record-breaking debut, The Royals is officially back in production — and it’s coming back with a noticeably different flavor.

Shooting for Season 2 kicked off on September 18 in Rajasthan and will continue through December, with a premiere targeted for the second half of 2027. Ishaan Khatter confirmed the news himself, sharing behind-the-scenes glimpses from a heritage haveli along with a simple caption about locking in for the shoot.

What’s Changing in The Royals Season 2?

The biggest shakeup? A shift in creative direction — literally and figuratively. Season 2 moves away from being purely a Aviraaj-Sophia romance and leans harder into the royal family’s internal power dynamics.

New Faces Joining the Royal Chaos

Sini Shetty, Miss India World 2022, steps in opposite Khatter — though reports suggest she’s playing an entirely new character rather than replacing Pednekar’s Sophia. She’s also gearing up for her Bollywood debut in a Dharma Productions horror film.

Meanwhile, Gurfateh Pirzada, known for Guilty and Class, adds another Netflix project to his growing résumé, having recently appeared in Lust Stories 3.

A New Director With a Distinct Voice

Perhaps the most intriguing change is behind the camera. Jasmeet K. Reen, who helmed the acclaimed black comedy Darlings, is taking over directing duties — a choice that hints Season 2 might carry sharper, darker undertones than the frothy romance of Season 1.

Returning cast members include Nora Fatehi, Sakshi Tanwar, Zeenat Aman, Dino Morea, Milind Soman, and several others, ensuring the show’s glamorous ensemble energy stays intact even as the story evolves.

Why This Matters

“The Royals” wasn’t just a hit — it became the first Indian series to trend in Netflix’s Global Top 10 Non-English TV list across 58 countries. With a new director, fresh faces, and a story pivoting toward family intrigue, Season 2 has real potential to expand the show’s appeal beyond its original rom-com crowd.
