Story and Themes

The film centers on a serious crime involving gang rape and explores the legal battle for justice. Taapsee’s character serves as the advocate fighting to secure justice for the victim while navigating a system often stacked against survivors. The cryptic campaign tagline “Eighty. Per Day. Every Day” hints at systemic issues, possibly referencing the alarming frequency of sexual crimes.

The motion poster’s haunting imagery—a girl fleeing from attackers, intercut with Taapsee as a determined lawyer—establishes the film’s urgent message. The tagline “Uss raat woh ghar nahi pahunchi” (That night she didn’t reach home) underscores the tragedy at the story’s core.

Taapsee and Anubhav’s Third Collaboration

This marks the third outing between Taapsee Pannu and director Anubhav Sinha, following Mulk (2018) and Thappad (2020). Both previous collaborations tackled socially conscious narratives with unflinching honesty. Assi appears positioned as a spiritual successor to these hard-hitting films, combining elements reminiscent of Pink (2016) and Mulk’s courtroom drama intensity.

Campaign Strategy and Marketing Approach

The film’s marketing strategy deliberately withheld traditional information—no star names, director credits, or production company logos appeared in initial teasers. Instead, cryptic text-based posters established intrigue: “Eighty. Per Day. Every Day.” followed by “The highest paid crew member on this film is the writer.” This approach positioned storytelling as paramount, reflecting the filmmakers’ commitment to substance over star power.

The decision to highlight the writer’s elevated compensation underscores the production’s values, suggesting a narrative-driven project rather than a star vehicle.

Trailer Exclusivity and Release Strategy

The full trailer for Assi is exclusively attached to Border 2 prints, which opened theatrically on January 23, 2026.

This exclusive trailer attachment ensures that audiences encountering Border 2 will simultaneously be introduced to Assi’s intensity, building momentum for the February 20 release.
