T20 World Cup 2024: Afghanistan Upsets Australia with a Historic 21 Run Victory in T20 World Cup

T20 World Cup 2024 : In a thrilling encounter at the T20 World Cup’s Super 8 stage, Afghanistan achieved a momentous 21 run victory over Australia, marking their first ever win against the cricketing giants in a senior international match. This victory not only keeps Afghanistan’s semi final hopes alive but also serves as a significant milestone in their cricketing journey.

Let’s have a look into more details: T20 World Cup 2024

A Solid Start from Afghan Openers

Winning the toss and opting to field, Australian skipper Mitchell Marsh expected his bowlers to dominate. However, Afghanistan’s top order batsmen had different plans. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran laid a strong foundation with half centuries, scoring 60 and 51 runs respectively. Their third century stand of the tournament saw them comfortably reach 118 by the 16th over, setting the stage for a challenging total.

Despite a late collapse triggered by Australia’s Pat Cummins, who claimed a hat-trick, Afghanistan managed to post 148 for 6. Cummins’ efforts, including wickets of Rashid Khan, Karim Janat, and Gulbadin Naib, put a temporary brake on Afghanistan’s scoring. But the total proved to be just enough on a tricky wicket.

Gulbadin Naib’s Stellar Bowling Performance

Australia’s chase got off to a rocky start with early wickets falling at regular intervals. The star of the night, Gulbadin Naib, emerged as Afghanistan’s unlikely hero. His medium pace bowling dismantled Australia’s batting lineup, finishing with career best figures of 4 for 20. Naib’s crucial wickets included that of Glenn Maxwell, who was Australia’s last hope with a fighting half-century.

Naib’s disciplined bowling, complemented by Afghanistan’s sharp fielding, saw Australia bowled out for 127 in 19.2 overs, handing Afghanistan a famous 21 run victory.

Rashid Khan and Gulbadin Naib Reflect on the Victory

Afghanistan’s captain Rashid Khan expressed immense pride and joy at the post match presentation. “Massive win for us as a team and as a nation. It’s something we missed in the last two years. Really happy with the win and super proud of the guys,” he said. Rashid praised the contributions of all rounders like Naib, highlighting their importance in the team’s strategy.

Naib, who was named Player of the Match, was equally ecstatic. Reflecting on the long awaited victory, he said, “We beat Australia at last! It is a great achievement for Afghanistan cricket. Our history isn’t too long, so this is a great achievement.”

Australian Captain Mitchell Marsh’s Response

Australian captain Mitchell Marsh acknowledged that his team was outplayed by a determined Afghan side. “They probably got 20 too many. It wasn’t the easiest of wickets but both teams played on it. As I said, we got outplayed today. We just need to win our next match to keep our hopes alive,” Marsh stated.

This victory is not just a win on the field; it’s a beacon of hope and a statement of Afghanistan’s growing prowess in international cricket. The team’s performance against Australia has set a high benchmark as they look forward to their next Super 8 match against Bangladesh. With two teams advancing to the semi finals from the group, every game is now crucial for Afghanistan’s chances to make it to the last four.
