Sydney Sweeney’s Toughest Euphoria Scene Involved a Vomit Pump and a Mouthpiece

Sydney Sweeney has played plenty of demanding roles, but nothing quite prepared her for one particular day on the set of Euphoria. Speaking candidly on the show “Hot Ones,” the actress revealed the single hardest sequence of her career — and it involved fake vomit, a hidden tube, and a mouthpiece rigged to her face.

Sydney Sweeney: Overview

The Scene That Broke Her

Sweeney plays Cassie Howard on Euphoria, the HBO drama that turned her into a household name. But fame came at a cost — quite literally, in this case, involving fake vomit. The scene in question comes from the fourth episode of Season 2, where Cassie is shown vomiting in a pool. Sweeney says it “took a lot of work,” largely because series creator Sam Levinson wanted the vomit to spray “everywhere” for maximum visual impact.

No Ordinary Fake Vomit Trick

Most on-screen vomiting scenes use a simple trick: a glass filled with a blended mixture from craft services, mixed with milk and water. Actors hold it in their mouth for a few seconds, then spit it out on cue. Simple, if unpleasant.

But this wasn’t a normal shoot. For Sweeney’s scene, the crew went several steps further, rigging up specialized equipment to get the exact effect Levinson wanted.

A Pump, a Tube, and a Mouthpiece

According to Sweeney, the production team installed a pump connected to a tube that was taped to her body — later erased digitally in post-production with visual effects. On top of that, they placed a mouthpiece inside her mouth. Throughout the scene, the mouthpiece was continuously refilled with fake vomit, and when she opened her mouth on cue, it shot out on command.

It’s a level of technical rigging most viewers would never guess was happening just out of frame — and it clearly left a mark on the actress.

“The Most Unpleasant Thing I’ve Ever Experienced”

Sweeney didn’t hold back describing the ordeal, calling it flatly the most unpleasant thing she’s ever experienced while filming. That’s a strong statement from an actress with a packed resume of physically and emotionally demanding roles — which makes this particular scene stand out even more.

Despite the grueling process behind the scenes, the payoff was worth it for the show as a whole. Euphoria wrapped its third and final season as a massive global hit, pulling in 25 million views worldwide and topping the charts in more than 50 countries.

Why This Story Resonates

Behind-the-scenes reveals like this one are part of what makes fans fall even harder for shows like Euphoria — the glossy final product hides a surprising amount of grit, discomfort, and technical wizardry. Sweeney’s honesty about the process gives fans a rare, unfiltered look at what actors sacrifice for a few seconds of screen time.
