Sydney Sweeney’s Sports Ad Sparks Backlash as Female Athletes Call Out Sexualization

Sydney Sweeney has found herself at the centre of a fresh controversy after appearing in a provocative advertising campaign for sports prediction company Novig. The campaign, which uses sports imagery alongside revealing visuals, has triggered strong criticism from female athletes who say it sexualizes women’s participation in sport.

Why Are Athletes Criticizing Sydney Sweeney?

The campaign features Sweeney portraying different sports while wearing little clothing. The advertisement promotes Novig as a platform focused on sports predictions, but its presentation has drawn criticism for placing sexual imagery ahead of athletic achievement.

Olympic swimmer Ariarne Titmus was among the most vocal critics. She argued that the campaign was disrespectful to women who dedicate years to training and competition, saying sport should represent qualities such as teamwork, commitment, excellence and unity.

Other athletes, including gymnast Gracie Kramer, swimmer Lani Pallister and water-polo player Tilly Kearns, responded by sharing videos highlighting their own training and competitive achievements.

More Female Athletes Join the Response

The criticism quickly spread across social media. Boxer Skye Nicolson also challenged the campaign, making a distinction between an athlete looking attractive while competing and using sexuality as the main selling point for a sports advertisement.

Several athletes used the phrase “this is what women in sport look like” while posting footage of themselves training, competing and celebrating victories. The response has turned the advertisement into a wider conversation about how women athletes are represented commercially.

How Did Sydney Sweeney Respond?

Sweeney has not simply ignored the controversy. Reports say she responded indirectly on Instagram by sharing images from ESPN’s Body Issue, featuring well-known athletes who have previously posed nude or partially nude, including Serena Williams, Ronda Rousey, Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird.

The actress has also stood by the campaign, describing its concept as playful and saying it was intended to put the focus on sports through confidence and humour.

The controversy therefore raises a bigger question about where advertising, personal choice and the representation of women in sport should intersect.
