Nintendo’s beloved plumber just proved he’s not a one-hit wonder. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has landed with a thunderous thud at the global box office — and the numbers are frankly jaw-dropping.
Super Mario Galaxy Opening Weekend: A Record-Breaking Debut
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie stormed to a massive global opening of USD 372.6 million in its first weekend, surpassing Frozen 2’s opening of USD 358.2 million — though it narrowly fell short of its own predecessor, The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s USD 375.6 million debut.
That’s the kind of close call that still deserves a round of applause. Besting Frozen 2 is no small feat, and landing just behind your own record-breaking prequel? That’s franchise dominance.
The film thus became the fifth biggest animated opening of all time worldwide, and also made this the only franchise in cinema history to have two installments each cross the USD 300 million opening weekend mark. Let that sink in.
Worldwide Box Office Breakdown
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie collected USD 190.8 million from domestic markets and USD 181.8 million from international territories in its opening weekend.
| Territory | Collection |
|---|---|
| Domestic (USA & Canada) | USD 190.8 million |
| International | USD 181.8 million |
| Worldwide Total | USD 372.6 million |
How Does It Rank Among All-Time Animation Openers?
Zootopia 2 holds the top spot among the biggest animated film openers ever with USD 560.3 million, followed by Ne Zha 2 at USD 431.3 million and Moana 2 at USD 389.3 million — placing Super Mario Galaxy Movie at fifth on the all-time list.
Impressive company to be in, no doubt.
