Nintendo dropped major news during their September 2025 Nintendo Direct! Both Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 2, available as a $70 bundle or individually at $40 each. This marks the first re-release of Galaxy 2 since its original 2010 launch.

Mario’s Space Adventure Returns
The beloved gravity-defying platformers are making their debut on Nintendo’s next-gen console as part of the Super Mario 40th Anniversary celebration. These space-faring adventures weren’t the only Mario announcements, with Super Mario Bros. Wonder Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and Mario Tennis Fever also revealed.

Galaxy 2’s Long-Awaited Return
Super Mario Galaxy 2 hasn’t been re-released since its original 2010 Wii launch, making this announcement particularly exciting for fans. Unlike the first Galaxy, which appeared in the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection, Galaxy 2 remained Wii-exclusive until now.
40th Anniversary Celebration Expands
The Galaxy announcement comes alongside major Mario franchise developments. A newly-titled Super Mario Galaxy Movie hits theaters in April 2026, extending the space-themed celebration beyond gaming into cinema.
Other Mario announcements included Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, rounding out the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary block.
Nintendo Switch 2 Launch Window Strengthens
These Mario classics join an impressive Switch 2 launch lineup. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade’s Switch 2 port launches January 22, while Hades 2 Nintendo Switch 2 Edition arrives September 25.
Pricing Strategy and Consumer Value
Nintendo’s dual pricing approach caters to different fan preferences. The $70 bundle offers value for complete Galaxy experience seekers, while $40 individual pricing allows selective purchasing based on personal preference or previous ownership.
Technical Enhancements Expected
While Nintendo hasn’t detailed specific improvements, Switch 2’s enhanced hardware likely enables higher resolution, improved frame rates, and potentially enhanced motion controls compared to the original Wii versions.
Market Impact for Switch 2
Having iconic Mario titles available at launch strengthens Switch 2’s appeal significantly. These beloved platformers could drive early adoption among Nintendo fans seeking nostalgic experiences with modern technical improvements.
The October 2 release perfectly positions these classics for the holiday gaming season.
