Stephen Colbert Is Co-Writing a New Lord of the Rings Movie — Middle-Earth Just Got a Late-Night Upgrade

Nobody saw this one coming. Stephen Colbert — beloved Late Show host, 10-time Emmy winner, and lifelong Tolkien obsessive — has officially been announced as co-writer of a brand-new Lord of the Rings movie. And honestly? The more you learn about it, the more exciting it sounds.

The New Lord of the Rings Movie

How Did This Even Happen?

It all started when Colbert kept returning to six early chapters in The Fellowship of the Ring that the original films never adapted. CNN He pitched the idea to Peter Jackson, worked out a “framing device” with his son, screenwriter Peter McGee, and over the last two years, they’ve developed a script alongside veteran LOTR screenwriter Philippa Boyens.

The timing? CBS announced the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, with the final episode set for May 21 — and Colbert joked, “It turns out I’m gonna be free starting this summer.”

What’s the Story About?

The film draws from chapters three through eight of Tolkien’s book, including Fog on the Barrow-downs, where Hobbits are trapped by a Barrow-wight — and it brings back fan-favourite character Tom Bombadil, who was omitted from the original trilogy.

The official synopsis reads: “Fourteen years after the passing of Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter Elanor has discovered a long-buried secret and is determined to uncover why the War of the Ring was very nearly lost before it even began.”

What About Hunt for Gollum First?

Shadow of the Past will arrive after Lord of the Rings: Hunt for Gollum, directed by Andy Serkis and set for release on December 17, 2027. That film features Kate Winslet in an undisclosed role, Ian McKellen returning as Gandalf, and Elijah Wood strongly hinting at his return as Frodo.

Across six films, the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit franchises have grossed more than $5.9 billion worldwide Deadline — so the appetite for more Middle-earth adventures is very much alive.
