The internet exploded with excitement over squid game 1987 and other supposed spinoffs, but here’s what’s really happening with Netflix’s blockbuster franchise. Millions fell for a viral image claiming squid game 1987 would premiere in Winter 2026 as part of an elaborate “Cinematic Universe”—except it’s completely fake.
Squid Game 1987: What’s Real vs. Fake
| Viral “Project” | Supposed Release | Reality Status |
|---|---|---|
| Squid Game 1987 | Winter 2026 | FAKE – Not in development |
| Squid Game USA | Fall 2026 | FAKE – Real project has different name |
| Squid Game 28th | Spring 2027 | FAKE – Complete fabrication |
| Squid Game World | Winter 2028 | FAKE – Never announced |
| Squid Game: America | TBA | REAL – In active development |
The Squid Game 1987 Hoax Explained
The squid game 1987 meme originated from a fake “Phase One” announcement that mimicked Marvel’s cinematic universe strategy. This fabricated image circulated across TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram, accumulating millions of views despite being entirely manufactured. Some versions even superimposed the fake announcement onto Marvel’s 2022 San Diego Comic-Con stage photos.
Why squid game 1987 went viral: The concept tapped into fan desires for expanded lore exploring the games’ origins. A 1987 prequel would theoretically show how the deadly competition began, making it believable enough to fool countless viewers seeking more Squid Game content after Season 3’s explosive finale.
What Squid Game Projects Are Actually Real?
While squid game 1987 doesn’t exist, Netflix isn’t done with the franchise. Here’s what’s genuinely in production:
Squid Game: The Challenge (Confirmed) – Season 2 of the reality competition filmed earlier this year and releases in 2025, likely around Thanksgiving. Netflix continues recruiting contestants, confirming the show’s ongoing status.
Squid Game Unleashed (Active) – The mobile game expanded to laptops and receives regular updates with new characters, episode-linked rewards, and iconic challenges from the series.
Squid Game: America (In Development) – The only legitimate spinoff, with David Fincher attached to direct. Unlike squid game 1987, this project exists but remains unconfirmed by Netflix. Reports suggest Dennis Kelly will write, with filming potentially beginning December 2025.
Fake Casting News Compounds Confusion
Beyond squid game 1987, viral posts falsely claim Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Matthew McConaughey, and Salma Hayek have been cast in Squid Game: America. Even Cate Blanchett’s Season 3 finale cameo doesn’t necessarily mean she’s locked for future installments—her role was labeled simply a “special appearance.”
Why No Squid Game 1987 or “Cinematic Universe”?
Netflix and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk remain deliberately vague about franchise expansion beyond what’s officially confirmed. The squid game 1987 concept, while creatively intriguing, represents fan speculation rather than Netflix’s actual strategy. The streamer prefers focused, quality expansions like Squid Game: America over scattershot universe-building.
The Reality: Squid Game will remain part of Netflix’s lineup for years, but through carefully curated projects—not the fabricated squid game 1987 or other meme-worthy “announcements” flooding social media.
