Spotify gets a make-over but its a mix of TikTok, Instagram and YouTube

Spotify has announced a redesigned home screen to help users discover new content, such as video podcasts and other audio formats. The new feed is more image-heavy and vertically scrolling, similar to the layout of social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok.

Spotify is rebranding itself as more than just a music app, with CEO Daniel Ek hoping to attract over 50 million “audio creators” to the platform. Spotify has made significant investments in podcasts, audiobooks, and live audio in recent years, and the redesign reflects the company’s broader goals.

The new home screen will feature auto-playing video podcasts and large photos, as well as more information about playlists and podcasts. The top section of the app will still display album and playlist covers, but users can now tap on “Music” or “Podcasts & Shows” to access a vertically scrolling feed similar to Instagram Stories, TikTok, or YouTube Shorts.

The new feature allows users to quickly preview songs and playlists without diving in completely, with each item auto-playing to give them an idea of what they’re getting into. The redesign also emphasises introducing users to new experiences and providing them with more opportunities to discover new content.

Spotify’s new design reflects the company’s ambition to be the leading audio platform, and the new personalised AI is just one example.

The Smart Shuffle feature, which adds tracks to existing playlists temporarily, is intended to improve on the “just for you playlist” concept that Spotify has been working on for years.

Furthermore, DJ, an artificial intelligence that spins records and hosts personalised radio shows, is another step in Spotify’s quest to become the preferred audio platform. Spotify’s redesign demonstrates the company’s commitment to being more than just a music app.

The update aims to improve the app’s usability and provide more opportunities for users to discover new content, such as video podcasts and other audio formats. The design reflects the company’s larger goals and desire to be at the forefront of music streaming, providing users with more personalised AI features to improve their experience.
