With Vijay Deverakonda’s wedding to Rashmika Mandanna just around the corner, the internet is doing what it does best — revisiting every iconic moment from his life. And one clip that keeps coming back? His brutally honest take at the 2025 WAVES Summit in Mumbai, where he shared a stage with Karan Johar and Kareena Kapoor Khan and dropped a remark so sharp, it went viral all over again.

What Did Vijay Deverakonda Actually Say?

Speaking about the global film industry and the pay gap between Indian and Hollywood actors, Vijay didn’t mince words. He pointed out that Brad Pitt earns roughly 100 times more than he does — not because of talent, but purely because more people around the world watch films in English, a language spread through colonialism rather than cultural merit.

His argument was simple but layered: English became the dominant global language through historical imposition, and that linguistic reach directly translates into box office power, brand value, and actor paychecks. He went further, wishing his ancestors had been more proactive in spreading Hindi or Telugu globally — because that’s precisely what would have levelled the playing field for Indian stars.

It’s the kind of comment that stings because it’s true. And it’s especially fascinating coming from a man whose films have crossed language barriers more than most.

Why This Quote Is Hitting Different Right Now

The timing couldn’t be more poetic. A man who argued that Indian cinema deserves global financial parity is now days away from one of the most high-profile South Indian weddings in recent memory — a union that itself is a cross-industry, pan-India moment.

Vijay’s WAVES comment wasn’t just a grievance about pay. It was a broader call for Indian storytelling — whether in Telugu, Tamil, or Hindi — to be valued on the same scale as Hollywood. Given how Pushpa 2, RRR, and the growing global appetite for South Indian content has shifted the narrative, his words feel more prophetic than ever.
