Fans have seen the Hulk smart, savage and even gray-skinned in theories. What they haven’t seen is a bearded Hulk. According to newly surfaced concept art, that nearly changed in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

The Hulk: The Beard That Wasn’t
One piece of concept art in the artbook shows the Hulk with a beard. In the MCU, he’s had light stubble or been clean-shaven, but never significant facial hair. Had it made the cut, it would have been a first.
The idea wasn’t random. The Hulk’s face usually mirrors Mark Ruffalo’s Banner in whichever project he appears. The film is set roughly four years after No Way Home, around the same point as Ruffalo’s last appearance in She-Hulk, so a beard could have signaled time passing. In the end, both halves of Banner appeared clean-shaven.

The Hulk We Actually Got
The artbook also shows other designs, and the final Hulk broke new ground. After years locked away because of Banner’s inhibitor, he reached his largest and most monstrous form yet.
- Smart Hulk: Appears briefly after the inhibitor is removed
- Savage Hulk: Emerges when Jean Grey’s mind control snaps something in Banner’s mind
- Gray Hulk: Fans theorized it, but the film chose a bigger Savage Hulk instead
The concept art of Savage Hulk looks less like Ruffalo’s face, which The Direct says shows a deliberately more monstrous, estranged version.
The Showdown
The climactic fight takes place in the Department of Damage Control building in New York. Jean Grey takes control of Banner’s mind, forces his transformation and uses the Hulk to distract Spider-Man. Spider-Man calls on the Punisher (Jon Bernthal), who gets pulled into the fight too.
What’s Next for Banner?
The film ends with Banner back in human form and locked away. A post-credit scene in Avengers: Endgame Encore then shows him self-exiled in an underground bunker, where Doctor Doom recruits him. That sets up Banner and the Hulk for Avengers: Doomsday, with Secret Wars also looking likely, per The Direct.
