The trailer also confirms the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 primary plot as well. Since the first film, Sonic’s main antagonist in the film series has been Doctor Robotnik (Jim Carrey), and in this new film Carrey will reprise that role and will also play Robotnik’s father, Gerald Robotnik. Together, they’ll release Shadow, who’ll be used to do battle with Sonic, Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), and Knuckles (Idris Elba). As the heroes see for themselves the level of power that Shadow possesses, the stakes of their fight are about to reach a brand new level.

With its upcoming action-heavy confrontation in theatres in the coming month, this movie aims to delight audiences. Jeff Fowler returns to direct Sonic the Hedgehog 3, having been there since the start of the franchise. He directed the first of his Sonic films and also did some work on the Knuckles spinoff series, which gave fans a chance to see Knuckles and adventure on his own.

The overall success of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which grossed $405 million globally, proved the franchise had legs, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 should be able to ride that momentum. With the holiday movie season in full swing, the film has the opportunity to make a big impact at the box office, even with competition from other major releases like Mufasa: The Lion King.
