Son of Thanjai: A flexible whip-sword. A fallen prince. A Tamil-first PS5 game with Hollywood-level writing talent behind it. This is the trailer everyone’s talking about.

Indian gaming just had a moment. And judging by the reveal trailer, this isn’t a small indie experiment — it’s a genuinely ambitious cinematic epic.

The Story: A Prince With Nothing Left to Lose

The game follows Vinnendiran, a 19-year-old Chola prince who loses his family, throne, and status before embarking on a journey through a kingdom grappling with invasion, famine, and political turmoil. But it’s not your standard revenge plot. Rather than focusing solely on reclaiming power, the narrative explores his transformation as he encounters ordinary people across the empire.

From dawn prayers in temple courtyards to crowded evening markets, life in Thanjai moves with or without you — farmers worry about their harvest, merchants chase opportunity, rebels whisper in corners, and priests, spies, soldiers, and labourers all have their place in a world that doesn’t revolve around the player.

The Surul Vaal: Gaming’s First Whip-Sword

A key gameplay feature is the Surul Vaal, a flexible whip-like sword rooted in South Indian martial traditions — specifically the South Indian martial art of Kalaripayattu, where the weapon isn’t just for combat but an extension of identity: coiled and restrained at rest, explosive and devastating when unleashed.

Combat isn’t the only path either. Stealth mechanics let players dismantle enemy strongholds through quiet takedowns, disguised infiltration, or methodical interrogation, rewarding patience and precision as much as brute force. A First for Tamil Gaming

This is where the project gets genuinely historic. The game’s story, screenplay, dialogues, and songs are written by Madhan Karky, the Tamil lyricist and writer behind films such as Endhiran, Baahubali, Mersal, and Vikram — with credits spanning over 400 films and 1,000 songs, marking his first foray into gaming.

Son of Thanjai is stated to be the first major video game to release in Tamil audio with English subtitles — a first for the language in the gaming space. Sticking close to its roots, the studio shared they grew up hearing stories about the Chola dynasty, an empire that ruled South India for over four centuries and built trade networks reaching China and Rome, but had never seen that world represented in a game.

The Bottom Line

Son of Thanjai isn’t just another period-piece action game — it’s a cultural statement wrapped in genre-defining combat mechanics. With a celebrated Tamil writer at the helm, a genuinely novel weapon system, and a story that prioritises empathy over empire-building clichés, this could be the breakout moment Indian gaming has been waiting for. No firm release date yet, but it’s already on every watchlist that matters.
