Shweta Tripathi Opens Up About Jitendra Kumar Stepping Into Mirzapur: The Movie

Recasting a beloved character is always risky business, especially when that character has nine years of fan loyalty attached to him. When Jitendra Kumar was announced as the new Bablu in “Mirzapur: The Movie,” replacing Vikrant Massey, the internet had mixed feelings. But now, with the film crossing Rs 150 crore at the box office, co-star Shweta Tripathi has finally addressed how Jitendra managed to win over a tight-knit cast — and audiences too.

Shweta Tripathi’s Honest Take on the Recasting

Speaking to NDTV, Shweta didn’t shy away from acknowledging just how difficult this transition was. She described the “Mirzapur” cast as a family that’s worked together for nearly a decade, admitting they could come across as intimidating to newcomers. Yet somehow, Jitendra walked in and made what she called a “full Bablu-type entry” — earning his place in the group almost instantly.

According to Shweta, nobody quite knows how he pulled it off, but he’s now fully embedded in the core team, showing up for both work and celebrations alike. She even threw in a fun detail: Jitendra apparently makes fantastic mutton, a small but telling sign of how naturally he’s fit into their circle.

A Friendship That Predates Mirzapur

What’s interesting is that Shweta and Jitendra’s collaboration isn’t new. The two previously worked together in the 2019 film “Gone Kesh,” and their on-screen chemistry was well received back then too. Shweta even shared a sweet memory — Jitendra gifted her a plant in a cute pot on her birthday during that shoot, and she still has it today. That existing bond, she suggests, made it easier to build the same warmth for “Mirzapur.”

Why This Casting Decision Mattered

Character continuity is always tricky in long-running franchises, especially ones with the kind of devoted fanbase that “Mirzapur” has built since its debut. The show’s popularity is part of a larger wave of Indian web series that reshaped how crime dramas are told, blending regional storytelling with high-stakes narrative arcs. Shweta’s comments suggest that rather than trying to mimic Massey’s version of Bablu, Jitendra brought his own interpretation to the role — something she says did “full justice” to the character without disrespecting the original portrayal.
