Months of Disagreement Culminate in Drastic Action

In a shocking turn of events, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) finds itself mired in controversy as its top-brass decided to dismiss its secretary general, Dr. Shaji Prabhakaran, citing a ‘breach of trust.’ This drastic decision appears to be the culmination of months of disagreements within the AIFF’s executive committee, revolving around various issues related to sports finances and administration.

President Kalyan Chaubey Takes Drastic Action

AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey, after consulting with the executive committee members, made the bold move to relieve Prabhakaran of his duties. The official announcement from the AIFF reads, “The All India Football Federation hereby announces that the services of Dr. Shaji Prabhakaran have been terminated due to a breach of trust with immediate effect as of November 7, 2023.” The final confirmation of this decision is set to come during the AIFF executive committee meeting in Delhi on Thursday.

Transition in Leadership

As part of this sudden change in leadership, the AIFF Deputy Secretary, M. Satyanarayan, has been entrusted with the role of acting secretary general until a suitable replacement is determined. This transition period will be closely watched as it will likely determine the immediate future direction of the AIFF.

Diverging Paths: A Rift in Vision

Sources within the AIFF have shed light on the reasons behind this dramatic decision. Prabhakaran’s actions and decisions came under scrutiny, leading to growing discontent among the executive committee members. Notably, Prabhakaran had been a key associate of President Chaubey, who ascended to power in September 2022, replacing the long-standing committee of Praful Patel, who had ruled the Federation for 13 years.

Under the leadership of Chaubey and Prabhakaran, the AIFF embarked on a series of reform measures aimed at revitalizing the organization’s operations. These efforts culminated in the unveiling of a strategic roadmap known as “Vision 2047” in January of this year. Notably, the senior national men’s team achieved a significant milestone by entering the top-100 of the FIFA rankings, a feat not accomplished since 2018, as part of the AIFF’s ambitious “Vision” plan.

Rising Discontentment and Questions

However, in recent times, discontentment had been simmering within the executive committee. Concerns were raised regarding Prabhakaran’s high compensation and certain financial decisions, which contributed to the growing schism within the organization. Matters reached a point where President Chaubey deemed it necessary to appoint a core committee to oversee Prabhakaran’s activities in crucial decision-making areas within the Federation.

Shaji Prabhakaran’s Response: A Shock and a Pledge

In response to his sudden termination, Shaji Prabhakaran took to X (Twitter), expressing his shock at the AIFF’s decision. He asserted, “AIFF’s decision to terminate me comes as a shock. We were working as a team. Charging me for ‘breach of trust’ is a massive allegation. More on this later. I remain a servant of the beautiful game and thank you all who have supported me in my honest effort for Indian football.

This decision has undoubtedly sent shockwaves through the Indian football community, leaving many questions unanswered and the future of the AIFF uncertain. The path forward will depend on how the executive committee resolves these internal disputes and charts a course for the future of Indian football.

The AIFF’s “Vision 2047” and the progress made thus far also hang in the balance, awaiting the decisions of the committee in this tumultuous period. The actions taken by the AIFF and its executive committee will significantly influence the path Indian football takes in the coming years, and the stakeholders of the sport will be closely watching for developments and resolutions.
